Surveyor 3

Surveyor 3 was launched on April 17, 1967, from Cape Canaveral aboard an Atlas Centaur LV-3C. The probe landed on the moon on April 20, 1967.

Surveyor 3 touched down on the lunar surface three times before landing because the engines did not shut down correctly.

Surveyor carried a television camera and other instrumentation for determining various properties of the lunar surface. In addition, it carried a surface sampler for digging trenches, making bearing tests, and otherwise manipulating the lunar surface in view of the television camera. Surveyor 3 took 6326 pictures during it's lifetime which ended on May 4, 1967.
