Surveyor

Surveyor was a series of unmanned probes designed to explore the moon. The spacecraft were designed to soft-land on the lunar surface. Each Surveyor spacecraft weighed about 600 pounds and consisted of a triangular framework of aluminum tubes supported by three footpads on legs, all topped by mast for solar array and antenna. The Surveyor was about 10 feet high and 14 feet in diameter.

Surveyor 1 was launched on May 30, 1966, and successfully landed on June 2. Surveyor 1 sent 11,240 pictures, revealing details as small as 2 millimeters (1/12th inch). The lander operated until January 7, 1967.

Surveyor 2 was launched on September 20, 1966 and crashed into the moon three days later.

Surveyor 3 was launched on April 17, 1967, and operated until May 4, 1967.

Surveyor 4 was launched on July 14, 1967, but its signal was lost minutes after it landed.

Surveyor 5 was launched on September 8, 1967 and worked until December 17, 1967.

Surveyor 6 was launched on November 7, 1967 and worked until December 14, 1967.

Surveyor 7 was launched on January 7, 1968 and worked until February 21, 1968.
