Jupiter AM-18

Able, a female rhesus monkey, and Baker, a female squirrel monkey, were launched 300 miles into space during the Jupiter AM-18 mission on May 28, 1959. The two astro-monkeys were recovered safely, but Able died shortly after the flight as doctors performed surgery to remove the sensors implanted underneath her skin.
