Lunar Module

Rather than building a large spacecraft which fly directly, land, take-off, then return to earth, the Apollo program used a special spacecraft for the moon-landing part of the journey. Designed for the sole purpose of ferrying astronauts and cargo to and from lunar orbit, the Lunar Module (LM) did not have to be aerodynamic. It also could be lighter since it never had to re-enter the earth's atmosphere.

The LM carried two astronauts who stood during descent and ascent - the spacecraft had no seats to save weight.
