Apollo 4

Apollo 4 was an unmanned test mission. It was the first launch of a Saturn V booster. The rocket (AS-501) was launched on November 9, 1967, at 07:00:01 a.m. EST from Launch Complex 39A, the first launch from Pad 39A.

The objectives of the mission were to demonstrate structural and thermal integrity and compatibility of the launch vehicle and spacecraft; confirm launch loads and dynamic characteristics; verify operation of Command Module heatshield, Service Propulsion System, and selected subsystems; evaluate performance of the Emergency Detection System in open-loop configuration; and demonstrate mission support facilities and operations needed for launch, mission conduct, and CM recovery. All mission objectives were achieved.
