Shock Cord

A shock cord connects the pieces of a rocket together during descent after deployment of the recovery system. In smaller rockets, shock cords are usually elastic. In larger rockets, shock cords are usually less elastic (often not elastic at all) in order to prevent the parts of the rockets from being pulled back into each other. Instead, a longer shock cord is used to allow air friction to slow down the parts as they separate.
