Off-the-Pad Abort

An "off-the-pad abort" is a method of getting astronauts quickly and safely away from the launch pad in the case of an accident on the launch pad.

The Mercury and Apollo programs used an escape tower which relied on rockets to pull the entire manned spacecraft up and away from the pad. The Gemini spacecraft had ejection seats.
