Meridiani Planum

Meridiani Planum was the landing site for the second of the two Mars Exploration Rovers, Opportunity. Meridiani Planum is about halfway around Mars from Gusev Crater where the other rover, Spirit landed.

Meridiani Planum was chosen as a landing site because it contains an ancient layer of hematite, an iron oxide that, on Earth, almost always forms in an environment containing liquid water.
