Kosmos 419Kosmos (Cosmos) 419 was launched on May 10, 1971. The space probe was the Soviet Union's attempt to beat the US's Mariner 8 to Mars in order to become the first Mars orbiter.An SL-12/D-1-e Proton booster put the spacecraft into a low Earth parking orbit, but the fourth stage failed to fire and the spacecraft re-entered the Earth's atmosphere two days later.
